It’s coming…. Jump

The days seem to be zipping by. Suddenly it’s almost December! What’s in Decemeber? My very first published work comes out! My short story Jump is to be released December 15 in ebook form! Yay!!! ~happy bouncy dances~

Check out my most awesome cover… dark and spooky… it’s perfect!

If you were told to jump off of a bridge would you? Perhaps it would depend on who was doing the asking. Our heroine has spunk and a sense of humor, however suffers from an extreme case of inappropriate clothing. When things take a turn from dangerous to worse what will she do when fantasy becomes reality? Warning: May include hot leather clad men, singing and demons.

Mark you Calendars for Decemeber 15th!!

Don’t forget to follow my blog or check back often, December is going to be one fun month while I tour around promoting my story! Check out my Jump Tour Stops so far!

It all started with a bright light. It ended with one too. Pt 1

A new book I’ve been puttering at. Here is the first little bit… I’m curious to see where it will go. :)

Happy Reading!

Becky leaned her forehead against the car window, watching her breath cause little patches of fog to form on its smooth surface. The glass felt cool against her forehead and helped ease the headache which had started to form over an hour ago. She wasn’t sure if it came from the sudden storm they had driven into or her boyfriends constant grumbling chatter.

She glanced over at Brian. He had both hands gripping the steering wheel tightly and a scowl on his handsome face. Too good looking for his own good he normally at least had a decent attitude.

Closing her eyes for a moment she listened to the sound of the windshield wipers rapidly squeaking and thumping as they struggled to keep the rain at bay.

“The weather channel said clear skies,” Brian said for the tenth time.

She let out a small sigh and opened her eyes again. “You know they’re never right. I don’t know why you bother to even look.”

He grimaced. “The satellite maps are good.”

“If you know what you’re looking for.”

His grimace turned into a scowl. She clenched her teeth and stared at her reflection in the window. They were both cranky, it’d been a long drive. Technically they’d gone to visit his grandmother in his old hometown. Reality ended up being they spent most of the weekend hopping from one old friends house to another.

She hadn’t minded at first, however being constantly introduced as ‘my girl’ had started to tick her off. Sitting quietly and listening to Brian rehash a million old jokes and stories she knew nothing about didn’t help either. When Sunday evening had finally arrived she’d been more than a little relieved to be heading home again.

Unfortunately Brian had for some reason gotten himself into a bad mood. Likely part of it was her fault, she’d been a little short with him all day. She’d gotten tired of him not thinking about what it would be like for her during all his visits. The idea of dragging him home and putting him through the same thing crossed her mind more than once. Of course she couldn’t do it though. She wasn’t a cruel person and despite their occasional arguments she loved Brian more than she ever had anyone else.

“Asshole!”

She jerked her head around in surprise. “What?”

Brian jerked his chin up, glaring into the rearview mirror. “Guy behind us.”

She turned in her seat and saw a car following closely behind them. Dangerous enough in the pouring rain at night, even worse the idiot had his high beams on. No wonder Brian was pissed.

She turned back around. “Maybe he’ll pass.”

He snorted in response and she felt the car slow. Peering ahead through the rain she saw the sign for a sharp turn in the road ahead.

Opening her mouth to say more she snapped it closed in surprise as suddenly a chill enveloped her. Feeling like someone was watching her she turned quickly in her seat, searching the backseat. There was no one there, obviously, and she thumped back around in annoyance.

“What are you doing?”

She shook her head. “Never mind.”

A blinding flash of light erupted in front of the car. Unable to help herself she screamed, throwing her hands up to cover her blinded eyes.

Brian cursed and she felt the car jerk to the side, then they were spinning, hydroplaning across the water coated road. She couldn’t even scream she felt so terrified, her hands gripping the armrests so tightly her fingers hurt.

Brian struggled to bring the car under control. For a moment she thought he almost had before suddenly it felt like something bumped them, sending them out of control again. They hit the guardrail hard, twice.

The third time it didn’t hold.

The Lost Daughter

Chapter One

Part 2

There are bonus’s to living by yourself in the middle of nowhere, utmost being, that when you wake up screaming nobody hears you. Bolting up in bed so fast I cracked my head against the headboard. “Crap!” reaching up with one hand I rubbed the back of my head and with the other turned on the bedside lamp. My heart leapt into my throat.

Dad, for Christ sake! You need a bell or something.”

Richard Young had been dead for five years, having your heart ripped out in a weird ritual would do that to you. At the moment he was sitting on the wooden rocking chair that I’d pushed into a corner. It was the best place to sit and read a book but Dad wasn’t reading. He was leaning to one side, his hand under his chin and he looked deep in thought.

You had the dream again, didn’t you?”

I didn’t want to talk about it, running my hands over the duvet to straighten it, I couldn’t meet his eyes. I knew what it meant.

He was upset, most days he could pass as a normal human being but when he was upset, you could see the spreading red stain blossom on whatever top he choice to appear in. At the moment it was a tiny pin prick against the whiteness of the shirt.

I wouldn’t call it a dream.”

Alice.”

Looking up I wondered when it had become normal for me to talk to the ghost of my Dad. Two years, turning eighteen things everything started to chance. Doors opening before I touched them. The water pipes bursting after stubbing my toe, yes really. I’d essentially become a hermit in the cottage my guardian and my Dad’s former best friend Thomas Carter brought me. I was scared that I was losing my mind and then Dad turned up. It hadn’t helped because it was then he told me the truth. About the cult and about me. I’m a witch, a talent I’d inherited from my mum and the reason the cult had grabbed me. They believed that my heart would unlock Pandora’s Box. You know I’ve never understood Doomsday cults, why attempt to destroy the world anyway? Everyone is screwed if the world is screwed.

Okay, I had the same nightmare…again. It’s on a endless loop.” I admitted as a sound that sounded like a sigh came from the rocking chair.

You know what it means.”

It’s been five years Dad are you sure?”

Leaning forward in the chair, he smiled. It wasn’t a pleasant grin and for a second he didn’t look like my Dad. “I’m sure, we need to step up your training.”

In three weeks, three people had vanished and not just any people, kids, teenagers. It’s hard to know the comings and goings of a tourist town but I knew that it could only mean one thing. Even if I was in a serious case of denial. The cult was back and they were going to try to end the world, again.

Book Review: Killer Cows by Dave Anderson

“Killer cows! They’re big! They’re angry! They smell bad! They’re coming! The only thing standing in their way is a lonely 14-year-old, whether he’s ready or not… Randy Meyer is the new kid in Satus Creek, a tiny farm town where nothing ever happens, and his days are filled with tedium. Then one summer afternoon, a meteor crashes nearby. It’s just the first in a series of events that will not only change his life, but threaten the entire planet. Soon after, vicious cows are on the rampage all over the country, and they’re not of this Earth! Armed with a newly-discovered flying saucer he doesn’t know how to fly, and a misfit group of new friends he doesn’t entirely trust, Randy is forced to grow up fast if he’s going to make decisions that will not only help him fit-in with his new peers, but save the world from a fate worse than death!”

I absolutely loved this book! An excellent young adult book that I’d have no issues with letting my 8 year read it. I really enjoyed all of the many sci-fi references. Killer Cows includes a variety of well developed characters and excellent growth of the main character Randy as he learns to not only to be himself and appreciate people for who they are, but see the bigger picture in life as well. Chock full of everything from humor to action to romance Killer Cows is definitely a must read! You’ll never look at cows the same again!

100% eBook royalties will be donated to family for son with lethal tumor. Your $3 makes a difference. Read more on Dave’s site: http://dmanderson.blogspot.com/

Killer Cows is available in Print and also in various eBook formats: [OmniLit][Kindle][Nook][Fictionwise]

How to Make the Most out of Twitter

I did a write up about Twitter for somewhere else, and decided I’d share it on my blog as well. Many of you have probably found your way here via Twitter, however perhaps you’ll read something you didn’t know before! Again this geared toward Authors or aspiring authors, however you can adjust for whatever you do!

Twitter is a wonderful networking tool, particularly when used properly.

Getting Started
Go to and bookmark www.twitter.com

Sign up, creating a user name.
Now you want to fill in all the little details. Click on Settings and then go to Profile
Upload a nice photo of you or your book. Include a link to your main website/blog
DO NOT forget to add a short bio. (Many people will not follow those with no bio)

Now you are all set and ready to get some followers, and follow people as well. Many people have links to their Twitter names on their websites, click to follow. Once you get a few you can check out their followers or who they follow and add them.

DON’T forget to follow back! You don’t have to follow everyone. If they look like a spambot or just a marketer I often don’t.

Now what?
Once you start getting followers, TALK to them. Say hi, interact. Post about what you are writing.
Don’t just promote your book or blogs. You need to be social as well. To talk to a person hit reply or type @theirusername so the message will go to them.

How do you tell if someone has posted to you?
There is a list of tabs above posts. Timeline shows all posts by everyone you follow.
@mentions will only show you posts which have mentioned your twitter name.

Retweeting
When you click the retweet button under someones post it is then tweeted by you as well. This is a very important way to spread information.
Things to retweet: helpful links, fellow authors blog posts, book promos etc.
People can tell if you have retweeted, you can also see if your tweets have been (Click on the Retweets tab above posts)

Lists
Twitter has a function which allows you to create lists (more on making these below)
They are especially helpful in finding new followers, many people will have some lists titled authors, writing, publishers etc. Check these out and follow away. (You can also follow a persons list in general)

How to create a list:
You will see a line of small links above tweets. Click on ‘Lists’
Select ‘Create a List’
Name your list ie favorites

How to add people to your new list:
Click on a persons twitter name
You will then get either a side view popping out, or their page in full
In the line which shows you are following them, click on the first little picture (looks like a list)
Your list name should be there, click the box to add them.

Now what?
To view your list go back to home.
Click on the ‘Lists’ link again.
Your list name should be there. By clicking it, you will then see all posts from those on your list and ONLY theirs.

Helpful isn’t it? Now rather than weeding through hundreds (or more) of other follower posts you can talk to, encourage and retweet your favorites.

Hashtags
Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context to your tweets. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. Start using hashtags in your tweets, preceding key words. It can be helpful to do a little research first, to find out if the subject you’re tweeting already has an established hashtag.

You can also search for a hashtag, or click on one in someone else’s link and all posts using that hashtag will come up.

How are these helpful? Sometimes they are used as a form of twitter chat. Ie the #ufchat (urban fantasy chat) occurs at a certain time and those interested talk back and forth using this tag in each tweet.

They are also a great way to find and collect new followers. Some great ones to use are #amwriting, #amediting, #WIP
Try adding these to your tweets, or clicking/searching the hashtag and see what others are doing!

Another way hashtags are used is for ‘follow’ days. These are days when you list people you follow so others can follow as well.
The most popular of these is #Followfriday or #FF
However pretty much any day can be a follow day #MM, #TT, #WW, #SS etc.
One writers often use is #WW for writer Wednesday.

There are 2 ways to participate in follow days. Quite commonly you see (for example) #FF and then a list of tweeters.
A more favorable way (but done less often bc it takes longer) is to #FF one tweeter and WHY a person should follow.

For Follow friday help check out this cool application: http://followfridayhelper.com

Here are some ways to most efficiently use Twitter:

When to Tweet:
First of all, you don’t have to tweet constantly to build a following. Tweeting a few times a day can still work. The great thing with twitter is you don’t (well can’t!) write a lot. Take a few minutes a couple of times a day to pop in.

What to Tweet
The trick is to manage your twitter time wisely.
Create lists of authors, favorites etc so you can easily read through tweets you’ve missed.

COMMENT BACK! I can’t stress this enough. Just posting links or quotes or what you are doing will not make you friends.

Check your @mentions. If someone talks to you TWEET BACK!

You don’t need to have an in depth conversation. Say thanks or how are you doing, hope you have a great day etc.
If you see and interesting tweet- comment- encourage others with a Yay! Good for you! or support others with That’s too bad, hope you’re feeling better soon. Etc.

Retweet interesting tweets, whether they be interesting posts, links to blogs, promotions etc.

Actually participating on twitter will make you friends. There are a lot of awesome and helpful people out there!

Why do you want twitter friends? A number of reasons:
You have the joy of interacting with some really cool people! :P
Promotion-wise:
They will retweet your posts- gaining you exposure to your site/blog etc and also gain more followers. When someone else retweets your post it then goes to ALL of their followers.

Make friends who are authors/bloggers- a great way to find people to co promote with- making friends can lead to blog interviews or book reviews. This is also a great way to find other authors to interview for your own blog.

You can also try doing a Call Out. Need more promotion? Tweet you are looking for others to review your book, that you would love to be interviewed on a blog, or are looking for authors to interview.

I will now stress again- COMMENT BACK and RETWEET.
PARTICIPATE and watch your followers and promotional ability grow!

Happy Tweeting! :D

How to Blog- and get people to read it!

I’m feeling very proud of myself today. My blog reached 2000 hits! Woot! I’m excited because I just started blogging in mid-July, less than four months ago!

So I’ve decided to blog about blogging today, since I keep getting asked, “How did you DO that?!” For those who really want to know.. read on!

For starters, I’d like to say I am an author, so I will be making who I blog in reference to that, however you can insert instead anything else at all. :)

So the first question is why am I blogging? I started out because I was told to when I was an aspiring author (which wasn’t that long ago! I’m still bouncing!) My book will not sell itself, I needed a PLATFORM which included a website, blog and various other social media such as Twitter and Facebook. (This is important for later)

I created my blog and then I had to decide WHAT exactly I was going to blog about. Thinking on that I decided it had to be things relevant to ME and also to my readers.

WHO my readers would be is very important. If your readers aren’t interested in what you’re writing about, they aren’t going to read, or come back. Since I had been building a Twitter following I saw most of my followers were authors, aspiring authors, bloggers and people who liked to read. Since I could relate to all them, that made the WHAT much easier for me.

Back to the WHAT. What you choose to write about needs to be your own, it needs to be YOU. If you hate book reviews, don’t do them. What I chose to blog about was the following:

  • My writing journey- General Rambling about the progress of my writing and finding a publisher
  • Things I had written- posting short stories etc I had wrote
  • Book Reviews
  • Author Interviews
  • Tips for authors and aspiring authors

Now to start blogging- anything you should know? YES!

First of all.. have a GREAT title. You want some catchy, relevant and if possible short. It can be more easily promoted this way.

Second- don’t forget to fill in the TAGS section if your blog provider has this option. This will help those browsing or searching (for example) wordpress.

Third- if your blog has the option to show the little buttons for your posts to be shared- do this! (Note: for these buttons to be SEEN you have to click on the post title and be taken to that posts page. So when you DO promote, use the link for the post, not your general blog link!)

Another big question:How OFTEN to blog?

This is of course, up to you and also depends on how much time you have. Some people blog every day, personally this can be too much. Followers can’t keep up. Once a month? Not enough… you are forgotten. I find a happy medium and 1-2 times a week. Occasionally I will do more, sometimes less. It is of course up to you :)

So now you are blogging away… you have great posts! They are awesome and everyone should read them! But.. how?

Now we go back to your PLATFORM. Time to get the word out!

Post links to your blog on every site site you can, on your website, in your profiles etc.

TWITTER: I tweet a lot. I make myself known by tweeting back and talking to a lot of them, making friends. All the authors I’ve interviewed I’ve met on twitter. They then also tweet my blog to further promote, or post on their website, fb abt the interview. One author interview got me 115 hits in just one day.

(SIDE NOTE: So by interacting you INCREASE your exposure. Guests on your blog are a good thing, they will help spread the word. This goes the same for facebook etc. TALK to your followers and fans!)

When you blog, post your links on facebook and any other place you can as well.

Now the big question… how often to promote a post? DON”T over promote! You will just be annoying. I only post a blog link ONCE to facebook. On twitter, it depends WHAT I wrote. An author interview or book review? Max 3 posts a day usually. I would like to note again, I tweet a lot, so they buried in my stream quickly :P I’ll usually do a New! and then Did you see…? or If you haven’t seen..

What about posting again at a later date? I do this (twitter only) and again, only on well received posts, or informative ones. Still, I often only do this if I haven’t blogged anything new, or maybe once a month or so.

Use your statisics to see how your posts are doing. Some getting a lot more hits than others? Perhaps you should concentrate on doing more of that type.

Some other blogging ideas to bring people in are doing contests, or going on (or being a host in) Blog tours.

Slowly your hits are going up! Yay! Now what?

Keep it up! Keep interacting! One big aspect of this: reply to any comments left on your blog. Yes, sometimes people do come back to check!

Have any questions? Do you have any further advice for bloggers who to gain exposure? Please comment! :)

Book Review: Dance on Fire by James Garcia Jr.

I’ve just finished reading Dance on Fire by James Garcia Jr. What a read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it!

Not too long ago I had Jimmy as a Featured Author here on my blog. His description of the story is just perfect, so here it is again:

“Two vampires descend upon an unsuspecting small town; Nathaniel is “good” and Vincent is not. They know each other intimately since Vincent “made” Nathaniel. Vincent has been pursuing his “son” over centuries and fully intends to reclaim what was lost to him. The story is not only the battles between the two of them, but how the entire community is affected, including two police detectives and their families. The title is one that I always thought that I would change, but never could find anything that pictured the story better. We are all taught as children to stop, drop and roll should we get caught on fire. Unfortunately, in that moment of panic, we all act differently. That was the picture that I was going for; these events take place and we watch how each one reacts.”

I loved how the author has you immediately pulled into the story. Though a good sized book at over 100,000 words, there is a wonderful pace to it which keeps you reading, drawing you into the story with every word. You’ll find yourself quickly immersed in the story, wondering what would happen next, feeling for the amazingly developed characters. The plot is superbly written, I loved how it also took the form of a mystery while you follow the detectives trying to solve the bizarre murders. You won’t be disappointed in the growing tension which builds up to a dramatic climax.

Don’t let the genre titles of horror or Christian put you off, if you love vampire stories, you’ll enjoy this book!

Dance on Fire is available in many forms of eBook at Smashwords.

NaNoWriMo Is Here! What am I doing!?!

It has finally arrived, the much anticipated start to NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) Can I write 50,000 words in a month? That’s 1, 667 a day. Looking at it that way, then yes, it’s doable. Normal days when I’m writing I can easily crank out 3-5k, my record is 7500 words in one day.

That said, I still don’t know WHAT I’m writing. I’ve been going back and forth between starting the sequel to the YA novel I just finished, or writing an Echo book.

Such a dilema! The sequel I have all the basics and characters already. I even have a general idea of what is going to happen. However I just finished the first book and am only half way through edits. Should I even bother writing a sequel before I find out if anyone may be interested in the first?

As for my Echo book, its rather the opposite. Though I have a very, very general idea I don’t have much else. I do have the title “The Echo and the Ghost” or maybe “The Ghost and the Echo” :P and a few of the characters (basically ones I’ve written in my shorts will be making appearances.) The Echo in question is to be Soul, who appeared briefly in my second Echo short, and also on my blog (See Echo Shorts Section) however I don’t even have a name for my Ghost, and know little other than it will be a female. :P If I only had a name… as the song goes.

I guess I will think on it today, and see if I have some sudden inspiration (which lucky does occasionally happen!)

Are you NaNoing?

If you want to be my NaNoWriMo buddy click here!

UPDATE: I went with the Echo book.

First lines:

It all started with a bright light. It ended with one too.

Wish me luck!
