Indie Indie Indie

Tap tap tap. This thing on? Hello, can you hear me?

There. That’s better. Welcome to Dr. Disturbo’s Mystery Blog!

Greetings, mortals of the planet Earth! It is I again, your future world DickTater. :D

I have once again hijacked the blog of the beautiful Ms. Wylie to suit my own purposes and gains. Ain’t that spectaculous?

So, miniminions, tonight I wanted to talk to you about something near and dear to my dusty black heart. Indie publishing.

Whoozamawatcher?

Indie, or independent publishing. Now I know that many a author follows the blogtastic universe of Wyles, so I know I don’t need to fill you in on the details, but I’ll put in a quick blurb for the muggles.

Basically when you write a book, there are three ways to get it published.

One, is to do it yourself. Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, and Omnilit have basically made it an UPLOAD AND SELL UNIVERSE. Write a book? Sell it as an eBook! Simple yet effective. Basically anybody can be an author these days. All you need is a computer, an internet connection, a firm grasp of the English Language, excellent grammar skills, artistic ability, word processing skills, a wizard like knowledge of photoshop, marketing skills, and last but not least, 38 hours in a day.

The second way is find yourself an agent. Rewrite your manuscript 300 times until they find it acceptable to send out to the big publishing houses in hopes that they actually pick it up, write you a big check, fly you all over the country, put your book in every bookstore in america, make nice posters with your face on it, and you live happily ever after. If this sounded unrealistic to you, it did to me. I wasted six months of my life trying to find an agent. I vowed NEVER to go this route again. I put my books out there…if they like they can come find me. I know this probably sounds pretty arrogant. It’s not. I don’t have an arrogant bone in my body. I dislike arrogant people. Ergo ipto facto sum wingardium leviosa…I don’t like agents. (If you’re an agent and you’re reading this paragraph, I apologize. I’m heavily medicated. If you’re NOT an agent I’ll let you in on a little secret…I just said that so they’d think I was.)

Now, the third method of publishing your book…

Independent publishers are basically moral humane individuals who happen to know a little more about publishing that most authors. Remember that whole paragraph two sections up where I listed all the knowledge you needed to publish your book? Yeah, well, they haz it. Or haz people who haz it. Basically all you need to do is write and market. Yes I said market. Any author who doesn’t market their own books, obviously doesn’t want the tri-level mansion in the hills of Malibu. (Pssst. Does Malibu have hills? I don’t even know to be honest, but it sounded good.)

What’s the downside to signing with an indie pub? I’ll be honest with you. Money. They don’t work for free people. But most (and I do mean most. Sure there are some evil bastards out there, but there is in every profession) are honest, hard working people. They never demand money for publishing your work. I mean that. Read that last sentence carefully. If a publisher tells you they need money to put your book out…tell them to go suck a camel’s butt. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I can’t emphasize that enough. No. Nuh uh. Just sayin.

So you find yourself an indie pub. They take your manuscript, edit it, make a cover, go over it with a fine tooth comb, upload it into all the available sites, put it out in paper back, make it all perdy and legit. What’s the downside? Cut your royalty check in half. Just like the big publishers, they take a percentage of your royalties. Fair trade? I think so. The trick is to find the best indie pub out there. Search the net. Search their names. See if anything bad comes back. Ask around. Ask on twitter. Ask on Facebook. As your local government. Call the Better Bidness Bureau. As a friend. Ask a neighbor. My point is…DO YOUR HOMEWORK. If you do your due diligence, chances are you’re going to be a LOT better off just by picking the name off a list and going with it.

Is there any downside to being an Indie Published Author? Why I’m glad you asked that!

There are a few. Most aren’t worth mentioning. It IS a lot of work. You can’t market some of the time. You really have to get out there and make your name known. You have to go to cons and fests and stand next to people wearing propellered beanies and have names like “RightSock”. It’s interesting. But you know what? It’s fun as hell :D

I LOVE CONS! THEMZ MAH PEOPLEZ!

The MAJOR downside is going into bookstores. TO me that is the end all be all of being a writer. Being able to stop into any bookstore in any town and say, “Hey. Look. That’s my book. I did that.”

Indie publishers just don’t have the distribution capabilities of the big publishers. I may never get that lil ole dream of mine to happen (That’s why I lied to the agents in paragraph 3 or 4. Just in case)

Well, as usual, I hope you enjoyed my hiya jacking of this here blog. I’ll be back next month to wreak more havoc on you unsuspecting mortals.

PS

Here’s my new book.

Go buy it so I don’t have to market tomorrow. :D

And here’s the one Wyles and I did together!

Born the son of a fire chief, Sean naturally developed a love of playing with fire. His family and friends quickly found other outlets for his destructive creativity. Writing is his latest endeavor.
Always a fan of the macabre, mythical, and magical, Sean found a love of urban fantasy and horror. After writing several novels in this genre, he found, fell in love with, and immersed himself in steampunk. He has always wanted to rewrite history and steampunk gave him that opportunity.
Sean currently lives in Florida as a fiber-optic engineer as well as an author. He was blessed with the two most amazing children he could ever hope for, has met the absolute love of his life, who coincidentally is his partner in everything. His hobbies include grand designs on world domination as well as a starring role in his own television sitcom.

What I’m Reading

It’s the new year… which means lots of new books to read! Over the holidays I was sadly way too busy to do much reading, and I’ve fallen even more behind…but I’m hoping things will calm down a bit now, if not… I’m promising myself to MAKE time to read more!

Here are the books I’m reading now, or at the top of my To Read List…

The Hum and the Shiver by Alex Bledsoe – I won this one through a blog contest. I’m lucky enough to have a personalized signed paperback. Yes, you may all be jealous. Alex is an amazing author, if you haven’t checked out any of his work get off your butt and do so!

Product Description

No one knows where the Tufa came from, or how they ended up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, yet when the first Europeans arrived, they were already there. Dark-haired, enigmatic, and suspicious of outsiders, the Tufa live quiet lives in the hills and valleys of Cloud County. While their origins may be lost to history, there are clues in their music—hints of their true nature buried in the songs they have passed down for generations.

Private Bronwyn Hyatt returns from Iraq wounded in body and in spirit, only to face the very things that drove her away in the first place: her family, her obligations to the Tufa, and her dangerous ex-boyfriend. But more trouble lurks in the mountains and hollows of her childhood home. Cryptic omens warn of impending tragedy, and a restless “haint” lurks nearby, waiting to reveal Bronwyn’s darkest secrets. Worst of all, Bronwyn has lost touch with the music that was once a vital part of her identity.

With death stalking her family, Bronwyn will need to summon the strength to take her place among the true Tufa and once again fly on the night winds. . . .

This Montana Man by Angela K. Roe – I’m a horrible person. This book was sent to me by my wonderful and talented friend Angela in the summer I think. I’ve just not had the time to read yet. I shall be rectifying that shortly!

Product Description

Caroline Edwards takes a year’s lease on a run-down farmhouse in the middle of Montana. She needs the solitude to complete her newest novel. Jamie Overton isn’t pleased that his mother rented out the old house and thinks it should be torn down. When he meets Caroline, he’s convinced this city girl is out of her element. Will those sparks grow stronger when Caroline’s ex puts in an appearance?

Last but not least… Zombies Don’t Cry (A Living Dead Love Story) by Rusty Fischer. Rusty is one of my favorite authors, and another friend! I had the pleasure of reading one of his books not yet published- Detention of the Living Dead. Total awesomesauce! Keep your eye out for it! I think Rusty is part zombie himself- other than clones it’s the only way I can think of that he can have the time to write so many wonderful stories :D Another author you MUST go and check out! I lucked out again with this book. I got a personalized signed paperback at christmas (sneaky people!) Again, you may all be jealous! (Isn’t the cover gorgeous?)

Product Description

In the sleepy small town of Barracuda Bay, Maddy Swift leads the life of a fairly typical teenager, but while attending a party one night, Maddy is struck by lightning and awakens to realize she has been reanimated and turned into a zombie. While becoming acquainted with her new “lifestyle,” Maddy stumbles upon two unexpected undead chaperones, fellow students Dane and Chloe, who begin to teach her the ways of zombie life, including defending the populace from Zerkers—the bad zombies. Together, on prom night, the three teens must ultimately defend Barracuda Bay High from an all-out zombie Armageddon.

And so begins a new year…

Hello my friends!

I know my blog has been very quiet lately. December was a crazy month with kids and work and Christmas and holidays. Overall I still had a fantastic holiday season! I hope all of you did as well.

Christmas was wonderful with my kids, parents, sister and her fiancée. The tree was nearly hidden by all of the presents. Us adults had great nights staying up playing poker and something called mexican train dominos (or something like that). Boxing Day shopping was loads of fun as well.

When the boys went off to their dads I wandered down to sunny Florida to refill my sunbeams. Strangely there was a cold spell and nearly froze my butt off. There was still one lovely day, and a visit to the beach was awesome. I was like a 6 year old running around picking up shells and playing in the sand. The ocean was cold, but I still went in for a few minutes, just because! I found loads of pretty shells, some coral and a bunch of broken sand dollars.

Overall I had loads of fun, and even had my first taste of fried pickles. Though leery at first, they were awesome and I can’t wait to have them again the next time I go down. Maybe they are available up here.. but I’ve never seen them!

I know you’re wondering…yes I did go to Disney one day! I haven’t been there since I was 10 years old. A lot was different, or I’ve forgetten, but I remembered some things and that was really neat. Again, I was like a 6 year old (but I could go on all the rides!) I have to say the Princess Castle is still awesome, and I loved how they lit it up at night with lights. The Electric Parade was fantastic, and so was later when they projected images on the castle changing into everything from a gingerbread house to flames! The best part was the fireworks. I’ve never seen any so fantastic! I wish pictures would have turned out.

So after returning home I’ve been spending the time tryin to get caught up on blogs and fb and twitter and emails. 0_o I’m still working on it, next comes dealing with a messy house. The xmas tree is still up!

I’ve loads planned for 2012, with Broken Aro coming out in October, as well as a number of shorts and who knows what else. My butt is getting into gear… time to continue my quest for world domination :)

Wishing you all a super wonderful 2012!!

Today is my 1 yr published anniversary!

Wow, how times flies! A year ago today my very first published work came out!

Jump by Jen Wylie

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult, Short Story

Published Dec 15 2010 by Echelon Press

Word Count: 3 288

Jump became #1 on Omnilit’s Best Seller List right away, and stayed on the chart for over 6 months! My first published story certainly is a my baby. It was fun to write, fun to edit and fun to market! Considering any complaints about it have been ‘it’s too short!” I’m quite happy with how it was received. (It is a SHORT story after all- they’re supposed to be short- or they aren’t short stories!)

Thanks to all of my readers and fans for their support and trying out a new authors work! Hugs and rainbows!

Description:

If you were told to jump off of a bridge would you?

Perhaps it would depend on who was doing the asking. Our heroine has spunk and a sense of humor, however suffers from an extreme case of inappropriate clothing. When things take a turn from dangerous to worse what will she do when fantasy becomes reality? Warning: May include hot leather clad men, singing and demons.

Excerpt:

“Jump.”

My mother’s voice popped into my head; “Would you jump off a bridge if so-and-so asked you too?”

I would of course reward her with my classic eye roll and a dragged out, “M-o-o-o-m!”

But there I stood on a bridge being asked to jump. Well, more like told to jump. The knife poking, none too gently, into my lower back clearly indicated the asking part wasn’t really applicable.

I pursed my lips together tightly, as a very childish, Don’t wanna, threatened to escape them.

Being a smart ass right now probably wouldn’t make my situation any better. My cheek still stung from the backhanded slap Mr. So-and-so had given me when we’d first met, as he tried to pick me up on my way home from Avery’s Bar. He hadn’t appreciated my witty negative comment then, and I doubt he’d like one now.

“I told you to jump.” His voice growled low in my ear as the knife pushed harder against the center of my back. He leaned into me from behind and I shivered at the his closeness to me.

His sanity level couldn’t be very high. What a piece of work, this slimeball. I decided Slimeball would be the perfect name for him. His dark greasy hair, smelly clothes and the filthy hands he had used to grab me off the street, and drag me up here with.

“Why?” I suddenly asked, staring down into the darkness below the bridge. It was an old abandoned railway bridge, not even overly high. The likelihood of me splattering to my death wasn’t very large. I’d probably just end up breaking a whole lot of bones.

I didn’t get why he wanted me to do this. Other than smacking me around a little, and some gentle prodding with the large nasty knife, he hadn’t tried anything with me. I’d expected to be dragged off and raped, or murdered, or at least robbed, but not told to jump of a little bridge.

Slimeball didn’t answer my question; he just poked me with the knife again. “Jump.”

“You are seriously demented,” I muttered and winced as pain suddenly erupted in my back. Guess he heard me.

He poked again, more like jabbed harder, and I spread my arms slightly as I wobbled, trying to maintain my balance. I stood a good foot away from the edge, but I had my favorite black bar boots on and the stupid things had three-inch spiked heels. They’re great for showing off my legs, but not so great for balance, or running. I’d tried running when I saw he wasn’t just some ass following me home. I knew he was serious trouble. I hadn’t gotten far when I pulled the classic “lady in distress” trip and fall bit. I’d been seriously surprised, and pissed, when I fell to the ground. I’d always scowled at the stupid chicks who always fell down in my favorite fantasy books. Scenes like that had always seemed extremely unrealistic to me, but apparently it does happen, especially when you’re wearing three inch heels. The black mini skirt didn’t help much either.

My very first blog talk interview on The Platform

Yesterday I did my very first interview via skype with John Rakestraw of The Platform.
I’ve done a lot of interviews over the last year, but they were all the ‘type out the answers’ kind. I didn’t have to actually talk. I’ve a little bit of a shy streak, so needless to say I was a bit nervous. John is a wonderful host, and quickly put me at ease, like I was talking to my long lost bestest friend. The time went by so quickly!

John’s show is fantastic, and if you’ve never checked it out you definitely should! He has great interviews with authors about pretty much anything writing related. I really enjoyed the interview, if you’re looking for a chance stop by the website to see when John has openings. I hope to stop by again one day!

For now, if you want to hear what I sound like and hear John and I chat about a whole bunch of writing related topics…click here!

Holy Crap…it’s Fall?

Hello my sweets!

I meant to write a post on Oct 1…but the days seem to be just zipping by. My parents always told me this would happen, the older you get the faster times goes. I’m rather afraid to see what happens in a few years…but anyways.

I’d love to wish you all a super happy FALL season! The leaves are really turning here, and it seems to be raining every day. At least it’s not snowing :P

My little monkey’s are both in school, and starting to actually enjoy it more. I picked up a little part time job there, just an hour a day, but the kids love to see me there and I really enjoy it. Of course the place is a germ haven, so now I not only get to deal with whatever the kids bring home, but pretty much what any kid might have. Currently I have a sore throat and I felt rather crappy all weekend. I might need to start taking some of those preventative cold things. Or wrap myself in bubblewrap… that would be cute ;)

Writing-wise, I’m currently working on first round edits for Broken Aro. The last two of my Tales of Ever short series are all edited and waiting to be published. #5 is supposed to be out in the next couple of weeks (yay!) A new Echo story is also all set to go, not sure when it will be out. When I get these Aro edits off I”m hoping to actually write something NEW. Woot woot! I’ll let you know how that goes.

I’m sure this month will just zip by, but I’ll try to pop on here more :) Lots of hugs to you all, and be safe!

Getting back in the game. I am, really!

So I was browsing through my facebook feed and came across a post by my friend Rusty Fischer. If you don’t know who I’m talking about you should swat yourself. Rusty writes some of the awesomest stories ever. Very soon I’m sure the whole world will know this, so you should be sure to check him out so you know who everyone else is talking about.

Sorry, went off on a tangent there. My point was Rusty did his very first vlog (video blog). (Click here to see it) on Valuing Relationships in Social Media. It rather struck a cord with me.

You see, I used to be awesome (and rather addicted) to chatting up a storm on facebook and twitter and helping others whenever I could. Then I started getting more and more followers on both, which made it harder. After a number of other things going on in my life, and getting behind with deadlines and writing and editing, I kinda rather dropped off the face of the earth for a bit. Well, more like I was bungie jumping back and forth, with occasional brief blog posts and stuff.

I’ve realized I need to make more time (or steal it from somewhere) to actually be out there and interacting with people. I’ve met soo many amazing people online and I really should get to know them better. So I have put my foot down and swatted myself … I’m going to work on it…and hopefully I’ll be able to stick to it. That said, look, I did a blog post. Aren’tcha  proud?

So if there is anything you’d like to talk to me about, please comment or drop me a note! I’m coming back to the world and plan on getting back in the game and somehow manage not to fall behind again…that ’cause that just sucked. LOL

Hugs and rainbows my friends!

Talk to you soon :)

Selling books…whatever works!

I’m new to selling print books. My first book came out in print just this June. It debuted at Printers Row in Chicago and I later attended Readercon in Burlingston, MA in July. Other than that, I’ve been selling to friends and family, or through friends and family and actually not doing too badly with that.

This summer was crazy busy and chaotic and I haven’t had a chance to get out there and do more book signings or events. I do plan on doing this (It’s on one of my To-Do Lists).

I had an inspiration this past long weekend. My mom and a friend were having a weekend long yard sale. I helped out, and even listed the sale on kijiji for them. It then occurred to me… I can put my books out too! So I set up a little spot with my pretty table cloth, a few books, bookmarks etc. I dressed up nice. I put a Author Book Signing thing on Kijiji too.

So how did things go? I sold 6 books. I gave out a LOT of bookmarks and business cards.

The best part? I didn’t have to pay hundreds of dollars to travel to a convention. It cost me nothing, not even really time, as I’d planned on being there anyways. So overall, I’m thrilled! Next spring we’re going to have another big yard sale. We’re hoping to get a few more people to join too and do more advertising about it. Guess what? I’ll be setting my books up again too.

What ‘outside of the box’ ways have you sold books? I’m always looking for some (and the cheaper the better LOL)

Kindlegraph- now that’s cool!

I recently signed up with a very cool site called Kindlegraph.

Why is it cool? People can get a personalized autograph from me for their copies of my kindle books. Neat eh? Of course trying to sign my name on the computer isn’t all that easy- but still a fun idea for people who don’t have a paperback to get autographed in person.

You can read all about it here. They even have a video!

I wonder what they will come up with next?

Check out my page on their site! CLICK HERE

What do you think about this sort of autograph?
