It all started with a bright light. It ended with one too. Pt 1

A new book I’ve been puttering at. Here is the first little bit… I’m curious to see where it will go. 🙂

Happy Reading!

Becky leaned her forehead against the car window, watching her breath cause little patches of fog to form on its smooth surface. The glass felt cool against her forehead and helped ease the headache which had started to form over an hour ago. She wasn’t sure if it came from the sudden storm they had driven into or her boyfriends constant grumbling chatter.

She glanced over at Brian. He had both hands gripping the steering wheel tightly and a scowl on his handsome face. Too good looking for his own good he normally at least had a decent attitude.

Closing her eyes for a moment she listened to the sound of the windshield wipers rapidly squeaking and thumping as they struggled to keep the rain at bay.

“The weather channel said clear skies,” Brian said for the tenth time.

She let out a small sigh and opened her eyes again. “You know they’re never right. I don’t know why you bother to even look.”

He grimaced. “The satellite maps are good.”

“If you know what you’re looking for.”

His grimace turned into a scowl. She clenched her teeth and stared at her reflection in the window. They were both cranky, it’d been a long drive. Technically they’d gone to visit his grandmother in his old hometown. Reality ended up being they spent most of the weekend hopping from one old friends house to another.

She hadn’t minded at first, however being constantly introduced as ‘my girl’ had started to tick her off. Sitting quietly and listening to Brian rehash a million old jokes and stories she knew nothing about didn’t help either. When Sunday evening had finally arrived she’d been more than a little relieved to be heading home again.

Unfortunately Brian had for some reason gotten himself into a bad mood. Likely part of it was her fault, she’d been a little short with him all day. She’d gotten tired of him not thinking about what it would be like for her during all his visits. The idea of dragging him home and putting him through the same thing crossed her mind more than once. Of course she couldn’t do it though. She wasn’t a cruel person and despite their occasional arguments she loved Brian more than she ever had anyone else.

She jerked her head around in surprise. “What?”

Brian jerked his chin up, glaring into the rearview mirror. “Guy behind us.”

She turned in her seat and saw a car following closely behind them. Dangerous enough in the pouring rain at night, even worse the idiot had his high beams on. No wonder Brian was pissed.

She turned back around. “Maybe he’ll pass.”

He snorted in response and she felt the car slow. Peering ahead through the rain she saw the sign for a sharp turn in the road ahead.

Opening her mouth to say more she snapped it closed in surprise as suddenly a chill enveloped her. Feeling like someone was watching her she turned quickly in her seat, searching the backseat. There was no one there, obviously, and she thumped back around in annoyance.

“What are you doing?”

She shook her head. “Never mind.”

A blinding flash of light erupted in front of the car. Unable to help herself she screamed, throwing her hands up to cover her blinded eyes.

Brian cursed and she felt the car jerk to the side, then they were spinning, hydroplaning across the water coated road. She couldn’t even scream she felt so terrified, her hands gripping the armrests so tightly her fingers hurt.

Brian struggled to bring the car under control. For a moment she thought he almost had before suddenly it felt like something bumped them, sending them out of control again. They hit the guardrail hard, twice.

The third time it didn’t hold.
